Lent 2014: Around the Table with Jesus

This Lent let us gather as one family around the table of Jesus. Everyone has a place around the table even though they may not be able to be physically present. It’s up to all of us to bring their cares and concerns to this holy table of the altar at Eucharist.

For Catholics, the liturgy (the Mass) is central to the spirit of Lent. From our experience of gathering around the table of the altar flows our Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Our prayer is enriched by the daily Scripture readings provided by the Church. Each family has a copy of the Word Among Us as well as a copy of Pope Francis’ encouraging words for each day. This booklet is small. It can fit in a purse or pocket to carry with you.

Our fasting is a personal choice. It can be fasting from something, for example, fasting from beer during Lent. I mention this because my brother Dan does this. Or fasting for someone who needs help or healing. Instead of complaining, we can offer our pain up to Jesus for a person in pain.

Our almsgiving or mercy-mindedness as Jesus reminds us, should be unselfconscious tenderness that flows naturally from our personal experience of God’s tenderness toward us. Let our mercy-mindedness be personal not merely writing a check to an organization that helps the poor. Let us feel the sacrifice in a personal way.

When you come to the liturgy this Lent, make it a part of your prayer to ask Jesus to help you so you can make your participation at Mass more conscious, active and heartfelt. Hopefully your encounter with the Lord at His Table during Mass will become more powerful and life giving. Perhaps as you enter church, you might pray this prayer I found in the February issue of the Word Among Us: “Jesus, thank you for inviting me to come to your house of prayer week after week. Please open my eyes and heart as I encounter you there. Amen.”

Parish Family Gatherings Around the Table of the Altar at Mass and Fellowship Table in the School

Sunday, March 2 - Fun Family Gathering! Mardi Gras Breakfast for the whole parish after Mass. Besides a great breakfast, each family can have the fun of decorating masks. In the midst of this hard winter, come and have fun.

Ash Wednesday, March 5 - Lent begins with two services, the Ecumenical service at 12:05 pm followed by lunch and Mass that evening at 7:00 pm.

Please come and join in praying with our brothers and sisters from other churches. We need as many members as possible to help make all of our guests welcome. Following the service we have lunch over in the school for everyone - another chance to fellowship with those from other churches.

The second service is Ash Wednesday Mass at 7:00 pm - a day of obligatory fast and abstinence.

Eucharist Around the Table with Jesus, Saturday/Sunday March 8 & 9 - Come a few minutes early as we begin reflecting on the Way of the Cross using a video.

Wednesday, March 12 - 5:30 pm Mass followed by supper. Families will make jelly bean bracelets out of colored beads.

Wednesday, March 19 - 5:30 pm Mass followed by supper at 6:00 pm. Celebrating the feast of St. Joseph, families will make a chain for the blessed medal of St. Joseph. Joseph as foster father was the breadwinner of the family. We ask each family to bring a loaf of bread for someone in need. We will take time to write a note to the person who gets the bread that night. We can take the bread to the Food Pantry or senior citizen center.
